The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with federal and academic partners, has been applying cutting-edge approaches to explore novel treatment methods for introduced Phragmites australis (common reed). A close collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey and Rutgers University is focused on developing and testing (laboratory and field) a non-toxic bioherbicide that targets the plant-microbe relationship to induce plant stress and ultimately plant death. Results from successive years of testing have demonstrated significant negative impacts on aboveground Phragmites tissues and reductions in belowground carbohydrate resource reserves. While further refinements to the bioherbicide formulation and application strategy are being actively performed to improve systemic and long-term effects, this approach provides a promising new strategy for Phragmites management.
