A New First: Ground-Covering Panicle Hydrangea

Gardeners, get ready — the world’s first ground-cover form of Hydrangea paniculata has arrived. Called Groundbreaker®, this plant was bred in the Netherlands by Living Creations and offers something never seen before: a low, spreading habit instead of the usual tall, upright shape. It still delivers the long, showy flower panicles paniculatas are famous for, but on a dense, ground-hugging plant.

How it Happened

Groundbreaker® was discovered after years of selective breeding, when trial plants showed a naturally spreading form. After testing for cold-hardiness, flower performance, and disease resistance, it was introduced to European gardeners in 2024–25.

Coming to the U.S.

North American trials are already underway. Distribution will likely flow through Plantipp/Concept Plants and their licensed growers, with garden centers and online retailers expected to be the first outlets.

When to Expect It

Because new plants need time for trials, propagation, and licensing, U.S. gardeners may see Groundbreaker® on the market in the next 1–3 years.

Why It Matters

• First true ground-covering panicle hydrangea

• Compact and hardy with a long bloom season

• Perfect for edging, containers, or mass plantings

Keep an eye out — this breakthrough hydrangea could be in American gardens sooner than you think!
